| QUOTE | LeBron's mom arrested
The mother of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James was arrested late Friday in Akron for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and other charges that included disorderly conduct.
Gloria M. James, 37, of Green, was stopped by two off-duty Akron police officers just before midnight on South Arlington Street at East Wilbeth Avenue, said Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards.
The two officers were working security for the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority and were driving an unmarked car when they spotted James, who was alone in the 2004 Cadillac Escalade, he said.
Edwards said the off-duty officers saw James' car as it turned south off Seventh Avenue onto Arlington Street and ``almost hit'' the AMHA car.
``She starts weaving in and out of traffic and passing people on the right,'' he said. At a traffic signal at the Wilbeth-Arlington intersection, the officers got out of their car, identified themselves and asked her to shut off the car and get out, Edwards said. They smelled a ``heavy odor'' of alcohol on James, said her eyes were glassy and she appeared to be disoriented, he said.
When she got out of the car, Edwards said, she struggled with police as they attempted to put handcuffs on her, and then began screaming.
She was placed in the back of the AMHA car and when an Akron police cruiser arrived, she was moved to the cruiser, Edwards said.
``She is kicking the back of the seat,'' Edwards said. ``Finally, she kicks the window'' out, he said.
James was placed in an Akron police wagon and was taken to the police station, where she refused to take a Breathalyzer and a sobriety test and refused to sign the citations issued to her, Edwards said.
She was booked into the Summit County Jail and posted bond. She was charged with reckless operation, speeding for driving 50 mph in a 30-mph zone, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, disorderly conduct and molestation of police equipment.
The police report said James could not recall how many alcoholic beverages she had consumed.
Police seized her driver's license, the report said.
James, the founder of the James Family Foundation, was released after posting 10 percent of a $2,500 bond. She is scheduled to appear for arraignment at 12:30 p.m. Monday in Akron Municipal Court.
Upon her arrest, police also discovered she had an outstanding speeding ticket from Jan. 7 in Springfield Township.
She was ticketed at 3:23 a.m. on South Arlington Road by Springfield Township police for driving 64 mph in a 40-mile per hour zone.
Efforts to contact James on Saturday were unsuccessful.
LeBron James, in Salt Lake City for a game against the Utah Jazz, declined to comment.
``I don't have all the info of what's going on,'' he said. ``Once I find that out and once I sit down with my family, you know, I'll be able to comment on it a little bit better.''
